Manchester United have appointed a lawyer to explore potential action against Cristiano Ronaldo for alleged breach of contract after claims made by the forward in a recent interview as the club seek to engineer his departure as quickly as possible.

This means that Ronaldo will almost certainly never play for United again and it is understood the 37-year-old has been instructed not to return to the club’s Carrington training base after Portugal in the World Cup in Qatar.

The Portugal captain, who is currently representing the team at the World Cup also said in the interview that members of the United hierarchy were trying to force him out of Old Trafford and doubted him when he said he could not attend the pre-season because his daughter was ill in hospital.
Ronaldo has also issued a statement to this effect saying that the club reached out and he left by mutual agreement.
