Serena Williams attended Bradenton’s IMG Academy when she was about 14 years old, and trained for nearly a decade with legendary coach Nick Bollettieri.

The Williams sisters had a long-standing relationship with Bollettieri, they visited the academy for years, and they often prepared for Grand Slams there.

Nick Bollettieri is considered by many to be one of the best tennis coaches of all time.  Bollettieri also authored Bollettieri’s Tennis Handbook, which covers everything from stroke techniques and strategies to skill development and physical and mental conditioning.

Bollettieri was awarded an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters by the New York College of Health Professions on May 18, 2008, for his contributions to the worlds of sports, fitness, and wellness. Bollettieri was also the commencement speaker at the college’s graduation ceremony.

He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2014. Bollettieri was the first white man to be inducted into the Black Tennis Hall of Fame the following year.
