Jackie Robinson Wife: Who was Rachel Robinson?

Rachel Annetta Robinson is the widow of professional baseball player Jackie Robinson, as well as a former professor and registered nurse from the United States.

The couple met Robinson at UCLA in 1941, just before Jackie Robinson left when his baseball eligibility expired. Rachel and Robinson married on February 10, 1946, the year before he made his major league debut.

Rachel Robinson continued her nursing career after Jackie Robinson retired from baseball at the end of the 1956 season, earning a master’s degree in psychiatric nursing from New York University.

She spent five years as a researcher and clinician at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s Department of Social and Community Psychiatry. She later worked as an Assistant Professor at Yale School of Nursing and as the Director of Nursing at the Connecticut Mental Health Center.

After Robinson’s death, his widow founded the Jackie Robinson Foundation, and she remains an officer as of 2021

The Jackie Robinson Foundation provides scholarships to minority youths for higher education while also honouring Jackie Robinson, a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
