Thomas Earl Emmer Jr., best known as Tom Emmer, is an American attorney and politician who has been the U.S. representative for Minnesota’s 6th congressional district since 2015.

He attended Boston College and the University of Alaska Fairbanks, graduating in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and he played hockey for both schools.
In 1988, he received a Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
After practicing law for several years, he opened his own law firm.
Prior to his election to congress, Emmer served as a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2005 to 2011.
He participated in one of the closest elections in the history of the state of Minnesota, losing the 2010 Minnesota gubernatorial election to Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party nominee Mark Dayton by less than half of a percentage point.
