Sue Baker, one of the original presenters of BBC’s Top Gear and a former monitoring editor of The Observer has died aged 67.

Baker, who joined the series in 1980, died on Monday morning, Nov. 14, 2022 after a long battle with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), an uncommon condition that affects the brain and nerves.

Baker also played a critical role in the formation and running of the Motor Racing News Service and also served as the Observer’s motoring editor for 13 years, departing in 1995.

An acclaimed journalist, Baker also served as the vice-president and a former chair of The Guild of Motoring Writers, who have paid glowing tribute to her.

The Guild of Motoring Writers in their tribute, described her as “a pioneer for women in automotive journalism.”
