Assata Olugbala Shakur (born JoAnne Deborah Byron; July 16, 1947;[a] also married name, JoAnne Chesimard) is an American freedom fighter, political activist, and member of the Black Liberation Army (BLA).

Assata Olugbala Shakur (born JoAnne Deborah Byron; July 16, 1947, also married name, JoAnne Chesimard) is an American freedom fighter, political activist, and member of the Black Liberation Army (BLA).

She participated in the student rights movement and campaigns against anti-Black racism and the Vietnam war in the 1970s. She has been living in Cuba since 1979. As part of the COINTEL-PRO campaign against Black activists in the 1970s, Shakur was targeted by law enforcement.

She was convicted in the first-degree murder of State Trooper Werner Foerster during a shootout on the New Jersey Turnpike in 1973.

After the Turnpike shootings, Shakur was briefly held at the Garden State Youth Correctional Facility in Yardville, Burlington County, New Jersey, and later moved to Rikers Island Correctional Institution for Women in New York City where she was kept in solitary confinement for 21 months.
