Cecily Strong is the daughter of Penelope and William Bill Strong who worked as an Associated Press bureau chief and now runs his public relations firm.

Penelope is a nurse practitioner, having worked extensively at area hospitals. Strong’s parents are divorced. Strong grew up adoring SNL as a child, reenacting sketches with her friend and watching old SNL commercials on VHS.

Cecily was hired for SNL while improvising at The Second City in Chicago, where she moved after graduating from CalArts. She was the co-anchor of the Weekend Update segment during her second year, which was also her first as a full-cast member.
For her work on Saturday Night Live, she was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the 72nd and 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards.
