In June 2022, Mendis’ wife gave birth to a baby girl. Mendis was included in the Sri Lankan team for the tour of England. In the first Test, he had a score of zero in the first innings but then added 53 runs in the second to reach his first test half-century.

He received the One Day International (ODI) batsman of the year title for the 2016–17 season in November 2017 at Sri Lanka Cricket’s annual awards ceremony.
