Alexander Daniel Hales is an English cricketer. He is a right-handed opening batter who currently plays for Nottinghamshire and the England cricket team in a white ball, limited-overs formats.

He made his One Day International debut against India in August 2014 and his Test cricket debut against South Africa in December 2015. Hales is the first English batter to score a T20I century. He is also the first batter to be dismissed for 99 in an ODI and a T20I.

On 29 April 2019, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced that Hales had been dropped from England’s preliminary World Cup squad and all England squads ahead of the international season.

Hales was not called up for England for the rest of England captain Eoin Morgan’s tenure, with Morgan stating that Hales had lost the trust of the team.

In September 2022, Hales was called back to the English T20 squad for the T20 World Cup, as a late replacement for the injured Jonny Bairstow.

Why is Alex Hales out of the squad?

Hales was axed from England’s 2019 World Cup squad over failing two drugs tests which then-skipper Eoin Morgan believed had “shown a complete disregard” for team values.

Senior players met and agreed that the Nottinghamshire batter should be de-selected from the group, a process Morgan was “delighted” with.

Buttler is among the six survivors from that squad three years ago which now heads to Australia following the white-ball leg of the first tour to Pakistan in 17 years. Liam Dawson and James Vince, part of the reserve list, make it eight.

But approving his return from international exile, Buttler mirrored the approach of his predecessor and consulted the squad and received a unanimous response.

“I spoke to lots of the senior players to make sure that no one would have any issues with Alex being back in the team if we wanted to select him,” Buttler said, upon the squad arriving in Karachi. “No one had any issues.

“He’s obviously been in excellent form. We know what a talented player he is and he’s gained a lot of experience as well since the last time he played for England.

Why did Alex Hales leave the team?

Alex Hales’ drive home from the England training camp in Cardiff in April 2019 felt like the longest journey of his life.

That morning England’s former managing director, Ashley Giles, had told Hales he was being kicked out of England’s World Cup squad because he had failed a second recreational drugs test.

Hales packed and left without talking to any of his teammates. He was convinced his career was over. He says it was his “lowest moment”.

Three years and four months later he is back in the England squad, as a late replacement for the injured Jonny Bairstow. “This feels like a second chance,” he says, “a chance to right the wrongs.”

There have been a few of them. Last November photos emerged of Hales wearing blackface while dressed as Tupac Shakur at a party in 2009. He apologised then and does so again now. “I was a dumb 19-year-old who had no idea of the ramifications of what he was doing,” he says.
