Who Is Mohammed Shia al-Sudani?
Mohammed Shia al-Sudani is an Iraqi politician has been Iraq’s prime minister since October 28, 2022.
Sudani hails from a Shiite Muslim political class.
He has served as the Iraqi Human Rights Minister in the Nouri al-Council Maliki’s, as well as governor of the province of Maysan.

Sudani served as an intermediary between the CPA and the administration of Maysan Province when the US and its allies invaded Iraq in 2003.

Sudani was voted to the Maysan Province Council in 2005 after serving as the mayor of Amarah City in 2004. He was re-elected in 2009, and the council chose him to be governor.
After the 2010 legislative elections, he became Minister of Human Rights, following an endorsement by the parliament.
He served briefly as chairman Accountability Commission for De-Ba’athification in 2011, with the authority to exclude people from government positions, who had ties to the previous ruling Ba’ath Party.
When ISIS executed thousands of Yazidis in northern Iraq in August 2014, he was the serving minister at the time.
Sudani had ordered a probe into ISIS’s crimes against civilians by the UN Human Rights Council.
Sudani was formally nominated for prime minister by the coordination framework in an effort to resolve the political crisis in Iraq that began in 2022.
