When did Pedro Martinez retire?

Pedro Martnez is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) starting pitcher who played for five different teams from 1992 to 2009.

Pedro Martinez officially announced his retirement on December 4, 2011. At the time of his retirement from active baseball, his career record of 219 wins and 100 losses ranked him fourth in MLB history in terms of winning percentage and was the highest such achievement by a right-hander since the modern pitching era began in 1903.

Martnez finished his career with a 2.93 ERA, the sixth-lowest by a pitcher with at least 2,500 innings pitched since 1920. Martnez’s career strikeout rate of 10.04 per nine innings trails only Randy Johnson’s (10.61) among pitchers with more than 1,500 innings pitched.

Martnez was an eight-time All-Star. He won three Cy Young Awards (1997, 1999, 2000) and was a runner-up twice (1998, 2002), compiling a 118-36 (.766) record with a 2.20 ERA while leading his league in ERA five times and winning percentage and strikeouts three times each.

Martnez was named one of five pitchers in the starting rotation of Sports Illustrated’s MLB All-Decade Team in December 2009. The Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery announced in February 2011 that it had acquired an oil painting of Martnez for its collection.
