Mauro Forghieri Obituary

Mauro Forghieri was a mechanical engineer from Italy. Forghieri was born in Modena, Emilia-Romagna.

Mauro graduated from the Liceo Scientifico and earned a Laurea in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bologna in 1959.

Mauro Forghieri is best known for his work with Scuderia Ferrari as a Formula One racing car designer in the 1960s and 1970s.

He is credited with introducing Formula One’s first designed rear wings at the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix and designing the first transversal automatic gear, also known as T gear.

He created some of Ferrari’s most iconic vehicles, including the 312 T series, which won three driver’s and four constructors’ championships between 1975 and 1979.

At the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix, Forghieri was the first engineer to install aerodynamic rear wings on a car, assisting Ferrari driver Chris Amon to pole position, nearly four seconds faster than the next fastest car.

He also created Ferrari’s first turbocharged engine. Ferrari became the first team to win the constructors’ title with a turbo car in 1982.

Mauro Forghieri passed away on 2 November 2022, at the age of 87. Ferrari marked his death by saying: “Legends last forever. It’s been an honour making history together. Ferrari and the world of motorsport will never forget you.”
