Mike Potter was a Marine Corps veteran who served in Vietnam. Potter, who raced primarily as an independent, made his Cup Series debut in the 1979 Southeastern 500 at Bristol.
It was the same race in which seven-time NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt won for the first time. Potter came in 16th place, driving his own No. 76 Chevrolet.

Highlights of his career included qualifying for the 1992 Daytona 500 in the No. 77 Chevrolet, where he finished 30th after retiring due to a fuel pump problem.
In the 1993 spring race at Darlington, he made his final Cup Series start for longtime car owner Jimmy Means. Mike Potter died Monday, October 31, 2022, after a lengthy illness. He was 73.
