French composer, cellist, and impresario Jacques Offenbach was a product of Germany during the Romantic era.

His roughly 100 operettas from the 1850s to the 1870s and his unfinished opera The Tales of Hoffmann are what people most often remember him for.
Fastidious critics, termed “Musical Snobs Ltd” by Gammond, demonstrated themselves to be opposed to widespread public acclaim both during Offenbach’s lifetime and in the obituary remarks in 1880.

George Hauger said in a 1980 article in The Musical Times that those critics not only undervalued Offenbach but also believed his music would soon be forgotten.
Jacques Offenbach Cause of Death
Offenbach died in Paris in 1880 at the age of 61. His cause of death was certified as heart failure brought on by acute gout.
He was given a state funeral; The Times wrote, “The crowd of distinguished men that accompanied him on his last journey amid the general sympathy of the public shows that the late composer was reckoned among the masters of his art.” He is buried in the Montmartre Cemetery.
