Tim’s mother Ann Roth was a teacher and landscape painter, while his father, Ernie Roth born in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, to an immigrant family of Irish descent, was a Fleet Street journalist and a painter.

Although Ernie was not of Jewish background, he changed his surname from “Smith” to the German/Yiddish “Roth” in the 1940s, as “an act of anti-Nazi solidarity.
