Ian Jack Obituary

Ian Jack was a journalist and author from the United Kingdom. Jack was born on February 7, 1945, in Farnworth, Lancashire.

In 1965, he began working as a trainee journalist for the Glasgow Herald. In 1970, he relocated to London to work for the Sunday Times, which was then under the editorship of Harold Evans.

He worked as a section editor before becoming a foreign correspondent specialising in India.

Before joining the team that founded the Independent on Sunday, which he edited from 1991 to 1995, he wrote for the Observer and Vanity Fair. He then became the editor of the literary magazine Granta, where he remained until 2007.

Ian Jack, passed away on 28 October 2022, at the age of 77 after a brief illness. Jack became ill on the Isle of Bute, where he spent a portion of each year, and died on Friday morning in Paisley.

Jack was named Journalist of the Year (Granada TV’s What the Papers Say award, 1985), Reporter of the Year (British Press Awards, 1988), and Editor of the Year (Newspaper Industry Awards, 1993). He was a member of the Royal Society of Literature.
