Ian Jack joined The Sunday Times in London in 1970 where he rose through the ranks to become a section editor and then a foreign correspondent-cum-feature writer with a particular interest in South Asia, particularly India.

He wrote for The Observer and Vanity Fair from 1986 to 1989 and then joined the team that founded The Independent on Sunday, which he edited from 1991 to 1995.

His editorship of Granta magazine, to which he had previously contributed as a writer, lasted twelve years, from 1997 to 2007.

Jack also commissioned and edited books by Diana Athill, Simon Gray, Janet Malcolm, and Travis Elborough while at Granta.

He began contributing to The Guardian on a regular basis in 2001 and began writing a weekly column for the paper six years later. He taught at King’s College London’s India Institute on occasion.

Ian Jack, passed away on 28 October 2022, at the age of 77 after a brief illness. Jack became ill on the Isle of Bute, where he spent a portion of each year, and died on Friday morning in Paisley.
