Mayor Quinton Lucas said Wheeler was a personal friend, mentor and “statesman all Kansas Citians, Missourians, and Americans could be proud of.” “Mayor Wheeler leaves behind a legacy which will be felt for generations to come,” Lucas said in a statement posted on social media.

U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a former Kansas City mayor who now serves in Congress, called Wheeler “the most visionary Mayor in the history of our great city.”

During his time as Kansas City Mayor in 1972, a new downtown airport was also built. In 2002, it was renamed “Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport” in honour of his service to Kansas City, which is still remembered today.

Charles Wheeler received the American Medical Association Benjamin Rush Award in 1981, the UMKC Lifetime Achievement Award in 1984, and the University of Kansas Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1997.
