She was diagnosed with oesophagal cancer in late 2015, but she kept her illness largely private.

On May 5, 2016, her family held a humanist funeral and cremation at Golders Green Crematorium to honour her life.

On July 4, 2016, a memorial service was held for Wood at St James Piccadilly. Jane Wymark, Daniel Rigby, Harriet Thorpe, and Julie Walters paid tributes at the event, which was only open by invitation.

Ria Jones and Michael Ball each performed one of Wood’s songs, with Nigel Lilley on piano accompaniment.

Wood was the subject of a seven-part show in 2017 that featured mostly excerpts from her TV and live work. The main series, titled Our Friend Victoria, aired on BBC One from 11 April to 9 May and was followed by a Christmas special on 23 December 2017.

A statue of Wood was unveiled in her hometown of Bury, Greater Manchester, on May 17, 2019.
