The Conservatives have two years before they must call a general election; however, many have called for one amid the chaos in parliament.

Despite this, a general election is not required until January 2025, when the parliamentary term expires.

Parliament will automatically dissolve on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, unless dissolved earlier by King Charles III.

The election would then be held 25 days later, on Tuesday, January 24, 2025, making the latest possible date for an election Tuesday, January 24, 2025.

A new leadership election will be completed by next Friday, Oct. 28. Those expected to run include former finance minister Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt, a former defence minister.

First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon said: “An utter shambles. This can’t go on. General Election now” while Sir Keir Starmer has renewed his call for an immediate general election, accusing Liz Truss’s government of being too mired in “pathetic squabbles” to govern the UK.
