The Cardinals selected him first overall as a “future pick” in the 1945 NFL Draft. Trippi was also pursued by the All-America Football Conference’s (AAFC) New York Yankees, as well as several professional baseball teams.

He eventually agreed to terms with the Cardinals on a record-breaking $100,000 contract. Trippi led the “Million Dollar Backfield” of Chicago to victory in the 1947 NFL Championship Game as a rookie.

Trippi was the all-time NFL leader in total yards by a player at the time, and he is still the only Pro Football Hall of Famer to have at least 1,000 passing, rushing, and receiving yards.

He was later named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 1940s and is one of only four players whose number has been retired at Georgia.

In 1959, Trippi was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, and in 1968, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
