Reynolds first rose to prominence when he starred in television series such as Gunsmoke, Hawk, and Dan August.
He was born on February 11, 1936, to Harriet Fernette “Fern” (née Miller) and Burton Milo Reynolds (1906–2002).
After graduating from Palm Beach High School, he attended Florida State University on a football scholarship and played halfback, starting in 1954.
While at Florida State, he roomed with the future college football coach, broadcaster, and analyst Lee Corso, and also became a brother of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
