Why is Anna May Wong on the quarter?

Anna May Wong is the first Asian American to appear on US currency as one of the first women depicted on the reverse of the quarter in the 2022-2025 American Women quarters series.

According to Mint director Ventris C. Gibson, “The fifth coin in our American Women Quarters Program honours Anna May Wong, a courageous advocate who championed increased representation and more multidimensional roles for Asian American actors,”

He continued “This quarter is designed to reflect the breadth and depth of accomplishments by Anna May Wong, who overcame challenges and obstacles she faced during her lifetime.”

Wong’s image, with her signature blunt bangs and pencil-thin brows, will appear on the back of new quarters beginning Monday, October 24, 2022.

The fifth design to emerge from the American Women Quarters Program, which honours trailblazing women in their respective fields.

Wong, regarded as the film industry’s first Chinese American star, overcame widespread prejudice to carve out a four-decade career in film, theatre, and radio.

She appeared on stage in London and New York alongside icons such as Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford, and Laurence Olivier.
