When Did Kristin Smart Disappear?

Kristin Smart disappeared on May 25, 1996. Kristin Smart was last seen on her way home from a party at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

Her body was never discovered. In 2002, Smart was declared dead. The disappearance of Kristin Smart prompted state legislation, including the Kristin Smart Campus Security Act.

The Act requires all public colleges and publicly funded educational institutions in California to have their security services enter into agreements with local police departments in cases involving or potentially involving violence against students, including missing students.

The California State Legislature passed the bill unanimously, and Governor Pete Wilson signed it into law.

Paul Flores and his father, Ruben Flores, were arrested and detained on suspicion of Smart’s disappearance on April 13, 2021.

Investigators searched their homes and discovered numerous “items of interest.” Their trial started in July 2022. Paul Flores was found guilty of Kristin Smart’s murder on October 18, 2022.
