Benjamin Civiletti Obiuary

Benjamin Civiletti was an American lawyer who served as the United States Attorney General from 1979 to 1981 during the Carter administration.

Civiletti was born on July 17, 1935, in Peekskill, New York. Civiletti grew up in nearby Lake Mahopac and Shrub Oak and attended Tarrytown’s Washington Irving High School.

In 1957, he received an A.B. in psychology from Johns Hopkins University. Four years later, he graduated from the University of Maryland School of Law in Baltimore, Maryland, with a Bachelor of Law.

Benjamin Civiletti was previously the Deputy Attorney General and Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division, making him the first Italian American to lead the Department of Justice.

Benjamin Civiletti was a senior partner at Venable LLP (formerly Venable, Baetjer & Howard) in Baltimore, where he specialised in commercial litigation and internal investigations.

Benjamin Civiletti died Sunday, October 16, 2022 evening from Parkinson’s disease at his Lutherville home. He was 87.
