Why is Bruce Sutter in the Hall of Fame?

Bruce Sutter is a Hall of Fame reliever who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006 in his 13th year of eligibility.

Bruce Sutter was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame for three reasons: In an era when bullpen stoppers were highly valued, he was a dominant closer.

He reached the milestone of 300 career saves at a time when that figure was significant and he was a trailblazer, the first notable pitcher to employ the split-fingered fastball.

Bruce was the first pitcher to be inducted into the Hall of Fame without ever starting a game, and he was a key figure in predicting how the use of relievers would evolve.

Bruce Sutter was inducted into the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame in November 2010. The Cardinals also honoured him by retiring his uniform number 42 in 2006 and inducting him into the Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2014.

Bruce Stutter passed away on October 13, 2022.  He was 69. Sutter was recently diagnosed with cancer and died Thursday night in hospice, surrounded by his family, according to Chad, one of Sutter’s three sons.
