Bruce Sutter Cause of Death

Bruce Sutter, the 1979 National League Cy Young Award winner and Hall of Fame reliever, passed away on October 13, 2022.  He was 69.

Sutter was recently diagnosed with cancer and died Thursday night in hospice, surrounded by his family, according to Chad, one of Sutter’s three sons.

“All our father ever wanted to be remembered as was being a great teammate, but he was so much more than that,” a statement from Chad Sutter and the family read.

“He was also a great husband to our mother for 50 [years], he was a great father and grandfather and he was a great friend. His love and passion for the game of baseball can only be surpassed by his love and passion for his family.”

Bruce Sutter is credited with being one of the first pitchers to use a split-finger fastball. The right-hander pitched in the major leagues for 12 seasons, was a six-time All-Star and finished his career with 300 saves.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred expressed “deep sadness” at the news. The Cardinals said Sutter is survived by his wife, three sons, a daughter-in-law and six grandkids.
