Joyce Dahmer relocated to the Fresno area shortly before her son Jeffrey’s crimes were revealed.

Joyce remained in Fresno and established “The Living Room,” an HIV community centre, in 1996, according to Reuters.

She worked as a case manager for the Central Valley AIDS Center until her death from breast cancer in 2000.

Joyce Dahmer’s friends and colleagues told The Los Angeles Times that they preferred to remember her for the work she’d done with the less fortunate when she died.

“She was enthusiastic and compassionate, and she turned her tragedy into being able to have a great deal of empathy for people with HIV,” Julio Mastro, executive director of the Living Room, told the Journal Sentinel, according to the Times.
