Russell won his first Formula One podium with Williams at the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix. Russell left Williams in 2022 to join the Mercedes team after being a member of the Mercedes Junior Driver Programme since 2017.

Russell was appointed as a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association in March 2021, succeeding the previous incumbent Romain Grosjean, who stepped down following his transition from Formula One to IndyCar.
