Robert I. Toll Obituary

Robert I. Toll was the co-founder of the American luxury homebuilder company Toll Brothers.

Robert Irwin Toll, better known as Bob, was born on December 30, 1940, in Elkins Park, a Philadelphia suburb.

His father worked in real estate and sold used cars. During the Great Depression, he purchased deeply discounted real-estate bonds, purchased land, and owned apartment buildings.

Robert Toll earned an undergraduate degree at Cornell, where he majored in political science, before going to law school.

Toll and his brother Bruce E. Toll founded Toll Brothers in 1967 with a focus on building luxury homes ($500,000+), beginning with a plot of land given to them by their father in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

They grew the business with a conservative financial model, always factoring in a 10% buffer for all projects and never assuming price appreciation during construction.

Mr Toll died at his home in New York, on Friday, October 7, 2022, according to the Fort Washington, Pa.-based company. He was 81 years old and had Parkinson’s disease.

Mr Toll is survived by his wife, Jane Toll, five children,12 grandchildren and his brother, Bruce.
