Why Did Christina Aguilera Change Her Name?

Record producer and singer Christina Aquilera changed her name to Xtina Aquilera because most people thought it was too ethnic.

“All the businessmen around me thought it was too long, too complicated, and too ethnic”, she had said.

However, the pop icon said she had refused to change her last name ‘Aquilera’ and had fought all her life to retain it. Despite contrary expectations, she has earned global recognition with her last name.

She was proud of her Latina heritage and was not ready to change that.

Christina Aquilera Career

Aguilera came to prominence after the release of her debut album, in the late 1990s.

Three hit songs from her debut album – “Genie in a Bottle”, “What a Girl Wants” and “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)” – topped the Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles.

Her maiden Spanish record, Mi Reflejo (2000), also ranked tops on the Billboard Top Latin Albums for nineteen weeks back to back.

Aquilera released many singles that recorded success in many countries, and in 2003, she was named the most successful female artist of the year.

Aguilera so far has sold over 90 million records, making her a best-selling music artist.

Her awards and accolades include five Grammy Awards, one Latin Grammy Award, two MTV Video Music Awards (VMA), one Billboard Music Awards, one Guinness World Record, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and Disney Legend.

As one of the greatest women in the industry, Aquilera earned a ranking amongst the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine.
