485 accident: One killed, one injured near John St. in Matthews

A fatal crash in Matthews caused a portion of Interstate 485 to be closed early Tuesday September 27, 2022 morning.

One person died, according to a WBTV crew on the scene. A second person was seriously injured and taken to the hospital, according to medics.

The collision occurred around 2:30 a.m. on I-485’s outer ring near John Street and involved two vehicles

One vehicle was parked on its side against the Jersey barrier. This investigation is being handled by state police.

The outer loop between John Street and Providence Road has reopened.

Kristen Makayla Vanderpool, 27, of Lincolnton, was identified as the driver who went the wrong way on the I-485 outer loop in Matthews early Tuesday morning by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
