The cause was complications of a heart attack, said Maurie Perl, a spokeswoman for Condé Nast. For 10 years, until 2004, Mr. Florio led Condé Nast, the magazine division of Advance Publications, the parent company owned by the Newhouse family.
It was a period of great change in the magazine industry, with many companies downsizing because of the growth of the Internet. Still, under Mr. Florio’s leadership, Condé Nast expanded from a relatively small company to the second-largest magazine publisher in the country, mostly by concentrating on magazines aimed at wealthy consumers of luxury goods and by aggressively focusing on selling advertising in them.
