Her parents, who both had Irish roots, got married in 1973 and divorced in 1981, when Mantel was just eleven years old.

Mantel adapted the name of her stepfather, Jack Mantel who later married her mother in 1982, and moved the family to Romiley, Cheshire.

Hilary Mantel was a British writer born on July 6, 1952, and well known for her award-winning masterpiece, Wolf Hall.

Mantel was a world-acclaimed writer, whose works spanned across historical fiction, personal memoirs and short stories.

Hilary Mantel Career

Mantel authored twelve novels, two collections of short stories, a personal memoir, and numerous articles and opinion pieces, during her lifetime.

Mantel published her first novel, Every Day is Mother’s Day, in 1985.

Her book, Wolf Hall trilogy, won her two Booker Prizes and sold over 1 million copies in the UK alone.

She won her second Booker Prize after the release of her other book, Bring Up The Bodies, which also won her the Costa Book of The Year Award in 2012.

She was one of the critics of the film, The Spectator, for four years and helped review a number of papers and magazines in Britain and the United States.
