Sam had been poisoned by mustard gas during the war.
In June 1918, he was also hit by shrapnel at the Battle of Belleau Wood, a fierce encounter in northern France that continued for weeks.

Levy was born on August 3rd, 1925, and was raised Jewish.
For eleven years, he served as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills for the majority of his tenure.
For another four years, Levy served as the head coach of the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League (CFL), where he won two Grey Cup championships.
