Subban’s parents immigrated to Canada from the Caribbean in the 1970s. Karl, his father, moved from Jamaica to Sudbury, and Maria, his mother, came from Montserrat to Hamilton.

Karl is a retired elementary school principal. Subban was born in Toronto and grew up in the Rexdale neighborhood.

Subban was chosen by the Canadiens in the second round, 43rd overall, in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

In 2013, he won the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defenseman and tied Kris Letang for the season’s most points among defensemen.

He signed an eight-year, $72 million contract with the Canadiens in the summer of 2014, which run through the 2021-22 season. In 834 career games, he finished with 115 goals and 467 points.
