In 1983, Parliament decided that women who do not cover their hair in public will be punished with 74 lashes.

Since 1995, unveiled women can also be imprisoned for up to 60 days. Mandatory veil wearing was bone out of a desire to establish an anti-Western societal order in Iran.

Is It Mandatory To Wear Hijab In Iran?
The hijab, the head covering worn by Muslim women, became compulsory in public for Iranian women and girls over the age of 9 after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Many Iranian women have flouted the rule over the years and pushed the boundaries of what officials say is acceptable clothing.
Even so, the public has remained defiant, as has been the case for the past 40 years. This defiance is set to continue even if the authorities continue or double down on their enforcement of the hijab law, which requires women and girls over the age of 9 to wear a head scarf in public.
