Mahsa Amini: Woman Dies after being arrested over strict hijab law

Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurd, died after being ‘violently arrested’ for violating hijab rules during an Iranian crackdown on women’s clothing.

Mahsa Amini was reportedly arrested while traveling with her family from Iran’s western province of Kurdistan to the capital, Tehran, to visit relatives when she was arrested for failing to comply with the country’s strict rules regarding women’s dress.

Witnesses claimed Amini was beaten in the police van, which the police deny. This tragedy comes just weeks after Ebrahim Raisi, Iran’s hardline president, ordered a crackdown on women’s rights.

He called for stricter enforcement of the country’s mandatory dress code, which has required all women to wear the hijab head-covering since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Amini’s family was informed that she had been taken to the hospital several hours after her arrest. The police told her family that Amini had a heart attack.

However, Amini’s family denied this, claiming that she was healthy and had not been experiencing any health issues.

Amini was in a coma when she arrived at the hospital, according to her family, and hospital staff told them she was brain dead.

Social media users have shared photos of Amini lying in a hospital bed in a coma, with bandages around her head and breathing tubes.

Iranian celebrities and politicians condemned her hospitalization and death. A reformist politician and former MP, Mahmoud Sadeghi, has urged the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to speak out about Amini’s case.
