He succeeded his father, Hussein, who had named Abdullah crown prince just weeks before his death.
Prince Hussein, 28, was named in honor of his grandfather, the late king Hussein bin Talal. A graduate of the British military academy Sandhurst, he holds the rank of captain in the Jordanian armed forces and can fly a military helicopter.
He was officially named crown prince in 2009 by a royal decree.

What is Abdullah II famous for?
The longest-serving current Arab leader, he was regarded by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre as the most influential Muslim in the world in 2016 and ranked fifth in 2022.
Abdullah is the custodian of the Muslim and Christian sacred sites in Jerusalem, a position held by his dynasty since 1924.
King Abdullah II, who has done more to seek religious harmony within Islam and between Islam and other religions than any other living political leader, was announced as the 2018 Templeton Prize Laureate on June 27 by the John Templeton Foundation, based in West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.
