John Stearns Cause Of Death

American baseball catcher and coach, John Stearns, passed away on September 15, 2022, following a long battle with cancer.

He was aged 71.

John dies just few weeks after attending an Old Timers’ Day at Citi Field in New York, the same day with the New York Mets’ 60th anniversary.

Who Was John Stearns?

John Stearns was an American pro baseball catcher and coach.

During his playing career, he had played with the New York Mets, and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Born on August 21, 1951, in Denver, Colorado, United States, John played high school and college baseball in Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver, Colorado and the University of Colorado respectively.

As an high school student, John won state championships in baseball and basketball.

He played as safety, as well as the team’s punter, recording 16 interceptions.

In 1973, John was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the first round, as the second overall pick in the MLB draft for that year.

John suffered injuries consistently during his playing career, which made him retire eventually.

As coach, John coached the New York Yankees in 1989, the Baltimore Orioles from 1996 to 1997, and the New York Mets from 2000–2001.
