The Great Star of Africa is also known as the Cullinan Diamond, the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever.

It was founded in South Africa as far back as 1905, and owned by Queen Elizabeth II.

The diamond was named after Thomas Cullinan, the owner of the mine where it was found.

The Cullinan Diamond weighs 3,106.75 carats (621.35 g) (21.9 ounces), (1.37 pounds).

In 1907, the Transvaal Colony government purchased the Cullinan Diamond and Prime Minister Louis Botha presented it to Edward VII, King of the United Kingdom.

Nine major stones of 1,055.89 carats (211.178 g) in total, were produced from the Cullinan Diamond.

King Edward VII had purchased Cullinan IV and gifted it to his wife Queen Alexandra and she had passed it down to Queen Mary, who later passed down the diamonds to her granddaughter Elizabeth II in 1953.

The Cullinans form part of the Crown Jewels, which belong to the King. The stone also sits on the head of the King’s Sceptre with Cross.

Seven other major diamonds, were personally owned by the late Elizabeth II.
