Anthony Varvaro, a six-year major league baseball player for the Seattle Mariners, Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox and current New York City police officer, has died.

Varvaro attended St. John’s University, where he played college baseball for the St. John’s Red Storm and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

After college, he had a six-year career in the majors as a relief pitcher with the Seattle Mariners, Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox.
“We are deeply saddened on the passing of former Braves pitcher Anthony Varvaro,” the Braves said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and colleagues.”
He was en route to serve at the World Trade Center Command in commemoration of September 11, 2001 activities when he was involved in a motor vehicle accident.

After retirement from baseball, Varvaro became a police officer with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and Port Authority officials also issued a statement expressing their condolences.

“On this solemn occasion as the Port Authority mourns the loss of 84 employees in the attacks on the World Trade Center — including 37 members of the Port Authority Police Department — our grief only deepens today with the passing of Officer Varvaro,” the statement said.

Varvaro died in a head-on collision with a wrong-way driver in Jersey City, New Jersey, a short distance from the Holland Tunnel.
Coincidentally, he was on his way to serve at the World Trade Center Command in commemoration of the September 11 attacks when the accident happened.

Anthony Varvaro was married to Kerry Ann Thomson, a graduate of Curtis High School. They got married in 2011 in a ceremony which took place at the Sacred Heart R.C. Church, West Brighton on Dec. 2.
The wedding was officiated by Rev. Louis Jerome, which was followed by a reception in the Staaten in West Brighton.
She earned both a bachelor of arts degree in education and a master of arts degree in special education from the College of Staten Island.
