Hall of Famer Frank Cignetti Sr, who carved out a unique coaching career, including 20 years turning his alma mater Indiana (Pa.) into a Division II power, has died. He was 84.

What happened to Frank Cignetti Sr.? How did Frank Cignetti die? There was no word on the circumstances which led to Cignetti’s demise.

Cignetti’s son Curt Cignetti, currently the head coach at James Madison, announced his father’s death on Saturday Sept. 10 on Twitter, saying;

“I was blessed to have a great Dad! He inspired me and so many others. Love you Dad! Rest in peace.”

Frank Cignetti Sr. coached at West Virginia from 1976 to 1979, going 17-27.

However, Cignetti found his greatest success at his alma mater, Division II Indiana (Pa.) and over a 20-year career there, he went 182-50-1 with 13 Division II playoff appearances and 15 playoff wins.

Cigenetti retired after the 2005 season as the third-winningest active coach in Division II and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2013.
