Former New Orleans Mayor Maurice ‘Moon’ Landrieu dies at 92

Former New Orleans Mayor Maurice “Moon” Landrieu, who helmed the city for most of the 1970s before holding a Cabinet position in the Carter administration, has died. He died Monday (Sept. 5) at the age of 92, according to family aide Ryan Berni.

What was Moon Landrieu’s cause of death? An exact cause of death was not stated. However, Ryan Berni, a longtime friend of the family, who confirmed Landrieu’s death said; “He died peacefully this morning [Sept. 5] surrounded by family.”

Born Maurice E. Landrieu on July 23, 1930, he was called Moon, a family nickname, throughout his life and eventually made that his legal first name.

He served three years in the Army before opening a small, walk-up law office with law school classmate Pascal Calogero, later the chief justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court.

He is survived by his wife Verna Satterlee, and nine children, including; former U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu and former Mayor of New Orleans Mitch Landrieu.
