Liz Truss named as Britain’s next prime minister

Liz Truss, who has been serving as the country’s foreign minister for the past 12 months, has been named as the Conservative Party’s new leader.

She will most likely be officially sworn in as the new prime minister on Tuesday September 6 2022 afternoon by Queen Elizabeth.

In her victory speech, Truss pledged, “I will deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy,” adding that she will also take on challenges from high energy bills to the National Health Service.

The outcome was determined after a lengthy nationwide poll by party activists this summer. In a six-year period marked by political turbulence, Truss will become the fourth leader of the country.

It is only the third time in history that a woman will take over as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, but it is also the third time in recent years that a change of prime minister has occurred without a national general election.

Truss succeeds Boris Johnson, who was brought down by a string of scandals in the first half of this year. He was forced to resign after losing the support of not only the majority of his fellow Conservative legislators, but also many of his own ministers.
