Frank Drake, an astronomer who pioneered the modern search for intelligent life in the universe passed away on September 2, 2022, at his home in Aptos, California, from natural causes at the age of 92.

Drake is best known for the equation that bears his name, which estimates the number of detectable alien societies in our Milky Way galaxy.

Drake developed his famous equation in 1961, a year after launching Project Ozma, which used a radio telescope to search for signals from extraterrestrial civilizations.
He was an emeritus professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he was also dean of Natural Sciences (1984–1988). He was a trustee of the SETI Institute.
Drake is survived by his wife, Amahl, and two daughters, as well as three children from a previous marriage.
