Canadian indie rock band, Arcade Fire, got its name from Win Butler’s old school bully who often spoke about an old arcade that once burned down, and in which  a group of children died in the process.

Arcade Fire is still very much active.

The band is made up of husband and wife Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, together with Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara.

Together, they all play 16 different instruments including guitar, drums, bass guitar, piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass, xylophone, glockenspiel, keyboard, synthesizer, French horn, accordion, harp, mandolin and hurdy-gurdy.

The band recently added former core member Sarah Neufeld and multi-instrumentalists Paul Beaubrun, Dan Boeckner and Eric Heigle to its team.

When Was Arcade Fire Formed?

Arcade Fire was formed in 2001 by Butler and Josh Deu, who were classmates at the time.

The band later became famous in 2004, following the release of their debut album Funeral.

In 2008, the band won the Meteor Music Award for Best International Album following the release of their second album, Neon Bible.

Their third studio album, The Suburbs, also won them the Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year, as well as an Oscar for Album of the Year in 2011.

Their fourth album, Reflektor, came in 2013 and bagged a nomination in the Best Original Score category at the 86th Academy Awards.

Arcade Fire’s fifth studio album Everything Now, was succeeded by their sixth album We, which was released in 2022.
