Lukoil acknowledged his death in a statement saying Maganove “passed away following a severe illness. Some media outlets have hypothesized a connection with other 2022 Russian mystery deaths.

Two people who knew Maganov well believed that it is unlikely that he committed suicide. President Vladimir Putin visited the hospital to pay his last respects on the day of Maganov’s death.

Maganov criticised the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, describing it as a tragedy and expressed sympathy to its victims.
