Wiard studied radio/television at Michigan State University. In 1962, he enlisted in the Army, where he conceived and created the studio and remote videotape department at Fort Benning in Georgia.

At the age of 80, Wiard passed away in Los Angeles, California, from complications related to heart failure in August 2022.
