Ernie Zampese Obituary

Former American football coach, Ernie Zampese, passed away on August 29, 2022.

He was aged 86 and survived by his son, Ken Zampese, other family members and friends.

Funeral arrangements for the late coach will be communicated to the public in due time.

Who Was Ernie Zampese?

Ernie was born on March 12, 1936. He had played for Santa Barbara High School, and had coached the Rams, as well as the Dallas Cowboys.

In 1953, he won the CIF Player of the Year and joined the USC Trojans as a halfback in 1955 and 1956.

Ernie ended up coaching at Allan Hancock Junior College, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, San Diego State University and NFL teams, such as the San Diego Chargers, the Washington Commanders, the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams.

While he was with the Rams, he helped them finish in the top 10 in passing yards in five seasons.

Ernie retired in 2004, and won the Award of Excellence from the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Zampese’s son, Ken Zampese, currently works as an NFL coach.
